Summary
In September 2020 a 16‑year‑old boy, still a juvenile, robbed a young man of €250 in cash at the Q car park in St Stephen's Green. Ten days later he killed a 39‑year‑old man, Claudio Robu, by kicking him to death in a laneway off Madison Road. The boy, who is now 17, pleaded guilty to the robbery and is serving a life sentence for the murder with a review after eight years. He was sentenced to 18 months' detention for the robbery, to run concurrently with the life sentence. The court noted his chaotic childhood, abandonment, and drug use, and that he had no prior convictions before the robbery. The 18‑month term is to be served at Oberstown detention centre.
