Jury deliberating in child cruelty trial

Summary

A jury has begun deliberating in the trial of a 39‑year‑old man and his 36‑year‑old wife, accused of neglect and cruelty toward their nine‑year‑old daughter who sustained life‑changing brain injuries. The parents pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault causing serious harm and three charges of child cruelty, alleged to have occurred at their Dublin family home between 28 June and 2 July 2019. The child was found unconscious on 2 July, later hospitalised with multiple bruises, cuts, bite marks, burns and brain bleeding, and now requires carers for basic daily needs. The accused are originally from North Africa and are not identified to protect the complainant's identity. On day twelve of the trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, a jury of six men and five women began deliberations after Judge Martin Nolan directed them on the relevant law.
