Summary

Christopher Moran, aged 51, pleaded guilty to being the getaway driver in the fatal shooting of gangster Wayne Whelan. The Director of Public Prosecutions accepted his plea. Moran's co‑accused, Anthony Casserly, 25, also pleaded guilty to participating in or contributing to Whelan's murder, and his plea was likewise accepted. Whelan was shot dead on 18 November 2019 at Mount Andrew Rise in Lucan, Co. Dublin, and the car he was in was set on fire with his remains inside. Moran was charged under Section 7(2) of the Criminal Law Act 1997 for impeding the apprehension of an offender, while Casserly was charged under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 for involvement in a criminal organisation. The case was heard by Mr Justice David Keane, who discharged the jury after the DPP indicated that pleas to lesser charges would be accepted.
