Teen jailed for burglaries at gated retirement complex
Summary
Felix Moorehouse, 19, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to three burglaries and an attempted burglary at a gated retirement complex in Dun Laoghaire on 14 January 2021. The victims were all over 90 and Moorehouse stole cash, bank cards, expensive jewellery and a phone. He had 25 prior convictions. Judge Martin Nolan noted that Moorehouse did not admit he knew the complex housed elderly residents, and that the incidents were particularly upsetting because the victims were cocooning during lockdown. The judge suspended the final 15 months of a five‑year sentence on the condition that Moorehouse engage with the Probation Service for 15 months after release. Garda Deirdre Finn described how Moorehouse entered the homes, stole items, and was identified by CCTV. His mother testified that he was influenced by his father, a chronic heroin addict with a criminal record, and that he had been well‑behaved at school but spent most weekends with his father.
