Mentally ill woman who killed and mutilated housemate to remain in CMH
Summary
Grace Miano, aged 53, was charged with the murder of Malawian man Limbani 'Robert' Mzoma, aged 27, at Tudor Lawns, Foxrock, Dublin, on 1 November 2018. She was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity by a unanimous jury verdict. On 11 October 2021, she appeared before Mr Justice Paul McDermott at the Central Criminal Court. Prosecutor Elva Duffy presented a report from a consultant psychiatrist at the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) recommending that Miano remain in the hospital for ongoing treatment. The psychiatrist diagnosed her with schizoaffective disorder and noted progress but a risk of relapse. Mr Justice McDermott committed Miano to the CMH under the Criminal Law (Insanity) Act 2006 to continue her treatment. Miano's defence counsel, Michael Bowman SC, described her delusions, including believing she was possessed by Princess Diana and that she killed Mzoma to protect Prince William and women.
