Jury fails to reach verdict in Roma man's murder trial
Summary
The Central Criminal Court heard the trial of 40‑year‑old Feri Anghel, a Roma gypsy, accused of murdering 49‑year‑old Romanian Ioan Artene Bob in Sean Walsh Park, Tallaght, on 13 April 2018. Bob was found alive with extensive blunt‑force injuries and died later that day. Dr Margot Bolster, the assistant state pathologist, described injuries that suggested stamping, punching and kicking, but could not rule out more than one assailant. CCTV footage showed Anghel and Bob travelling together on a Luas tram and later walking toward the park; further footage captured a person resembling Anghel at an ATM using Bob's card. The defence argued that forensic evidence indicated other people were present and that the prosecution had not established Anghel's sole responsibility. The jury, reduced from 12 to 10, could not reach a unanimous verdict after three days of deliberation and the case was adjourned to 4 October for a possible retrial. Feri Anghel pleaded not guilty.
