Mother applies to dismiss charges of attempted murder of infant twins

Summary

A 39‑year‑old mother has applied to the Central Criminal Court to have two attempted‑murder charges against her dismissed. The charges relate to an incident on 9 October 2019 at her Dublin home, where she allegedly tried to kill her 18‑month‑old twin sons and also allegedly caused serious harm to one of them. She is further charged with producing a large kitchen knife in a manner that could inflict serious injury and with falsely imprisoning a woman on the same date. Defence counsel Anne Rowland SC told the court that the application is under Section 4E of the Criminal Justice Act 1999, which seeks dismissal of a charge. The court heard submissions from Rowland and from Sean Guerin SC for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The trial is expected to take place in October, and Mr Justice Michael MacGrath will rule on the application on 29 July.
