Summary
In a Munster abuse trial, a social worker testified that she had concerns about the intellectual capacity of the parents of three children accused of abuse between 2014 and 2016. She had noted a learning disability in the parents after several meetings and had referred them for assessment, finding the mother had a mild intellectual disability. The worker said she had provided extensive support to enable the parents to care for the children, but that the support was withdrawn after the children were taken into state care following a District Court hearing in April 2016. She described the parents as struggling to cope and said she had exhausted all other options before recommending the children be removed. The accused parents, aunts, uncles and their spouses have all pleaded not guilty to the charges presented in the case.
