Summary
Dylan Deegan, 24, turned up at a solicitor's office in Tallaght to admit to a robbery, saying he wanted to be jailed. He had been on bail for two earlier robberies when he raided the Insomnia Café in February 2021, demanding money from the till. Gardaí tracked him via CCTV to a taxi and then to the solicitor's office, where he confessed. Deegan had previously pleaded guilty to robberies at the Back Lane Hostel (April 2020), Cash for Clothes (July 2020) and Insomnia (February 2021). He was remanded in custody since February. Judge Melanie Greally sentenced him to three and a half years for the April 2020 mugging of a homeless man, noting the victim's injuries and psychological impact. The sentencing of the Insomnia robbery was adjourned to October 2021. Deegan's defence highlighted his difficult childhood and drug addiction.
