Brothers avoid jail over 'too good to be true' stolen metal

Summary

Patrick (27) and Anthony (29) Boyle were charged with possession of three stolen aluminium coils valued at €9,000. They had received €2,386 in cheques, which they cashed in a shop, and later repaid the shopkeeper after the cheques were cancelled. The brothers were not alleged to have been involved in the original theft of the coils. They pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 24 March 2018. Judge Martin Nolan noted that the original owner had recovered the metal and that no loss had been suffered. He acknowledged the boys' remorse and the fact that they had brought €2,000 to court. The judge imposed a two‑year sentence on each, suspended in full, and the brothers avoided jail.
