The Court of Appeal, hearing the case on 15 April 2021, noted that a delay in the investigation—caused by a Garda repeatedly calling the wrong address—meant the defendant would serve most of his sentence in an adult prison once he turns 18 and six months. The judge had originally set a headline sentence of five years, reduced to 18 months after considering mitigating factors, including the defendant's age at the time of the offence. The defendant pleaded guilty on 27 July 2020 to defilement under the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2006.
