Teen jailed for 'completely senseless act of violence'

Dubliner Ross Crea (18) has been sentenced to two years imprisonment, with the final 14 months suspended on strict conditions, for assault causing harm at Cope Street, Dublin 2 on April 18, 2019. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when the accused, along with another person, approached the victim and asked for a cigarette. When the victim refused, Crea stabbed him in the shoulder with a screwdriver before fleeing the scene. The victim sustained a puncture wound to his shoulder, which did not require inpatient hospital treatment. Crea was extremely intoxicated upon his arrest and was unable to get to his feet in a garda station. His previous convictions include robbery, attempted robbery, and criminal damage. The court heard that Crea had been living with his grandmother prior to moving back to the city centre to live with his mother and step-father after a period of homelessness. Counsel for Crea stated that her client has little recollection of the offence but accepts full responsibility and is remorseful. Judge Martin Nolan noted that the injury was not serious and that the custodial sentence was lessened on the basis of Crea's youth and the hope for rehabilitation.
