Jail for rioter who escaped from youth detention centre
Summary
In March 2021, a 20‑year‑old Dublin man, Calvin Brophy, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for his role in a violent escape from the Oberstown youth detention centre in May 2017. At that time he was 17 and, together with two other youths, used metal bars and other implements to damage the centre, smash a CCTV camera, and break into a tool shed. They stole an angle grinder and a sledgehammer, which they used to cut through a perimeter fence and escape. Brophy admitted his involvement after walking into a Garda station two months later, but he failed to appear for trial, leading to a warrant and arrest in November. He pleaded guilty to criminal damage and was found guilty of the offences.
