Summary

Paul Heaney, aged 37, and Gareth Mallon, aged 39, carried out a robbery near the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin on 21 October 2019. Mallon, who held a realistic imitation firearm, approached an Italian student, pointed the gun at his legs, and demanded money. Heaney, unarmed and wearing a tissue over his face, joined the assault. The student handed over €60, after which Mallon pointed the gun at a teacher who screamed. A second teacher intervened and the two robbers fled. Heaney voluntarily presented himself at a Garda station a few days later and pleaded guilty to robbery and attempted robbery at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He has 51 prior convictions. Mallon was sentenced to four years' imprisonment in December. Heaney's sentencing is scheduled for next month, with the court noting his remorse and desire for rehabilitation. The case was highlighted on the Joe Duffy radio show and the Liveline programme.
