Armed raider left behind by accomplices
Summary
In a robbery at the Kilbarrack post office, Keith Deegan (33) was left behind by his two accomplices when they fled. Deegan had armed himself with a tow bar wrapped in a towel and entered the shop with two others. The masked men smashed the security glass and separated staff from customers to access the cash. Witnesses described the chaos, with staff scrambling across broken glass to escape. Deegan was found holding €6,463, while the other men took just under €6,000, which remains unrecovered. He pleaded guilty to robbery, false imprisonment, criminal damage to the security glass, and allowing himself to be carried in the stolen car used to reach the post office. With 42 prior convictions, including robbery and drug offences, Deegan was sentenced to six years' imprisonment, with the final year suspended on the condition of residential drug treatment. The case remains under investigation by the DPP.
