'Easy target' granny avoids jail over tranquillisers

Summary

Alma O'Connor, 51, of Finn Street, Oxmantown Road, Dublin 7, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for sale or supply with a value exceeding €13,000. On 5 December 2018, Gardaí obtained a search warrant for her address and were allowed into the house by her daughter. O'Connor showed them a black bag containing about 9,800 Alprazolam tablets, valued at €19,640. Garda Donal Donoghue explained that the tablets were delivered by post under the instructions of another person who had put O'Connor in fear. The defendant was described as an "easy target" by an individual of a more experienced criminal element. O'Connor had no prior convictions. Judge Pauline Codd sentenced her to two‑and‑a‑half years' imprisonment, fully suspended on strict conditions, and noted it would be unjust to impose the mandatory minimum. The case was heard in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
