'Very unlucky' drugs defendant was shot in head, had fingers removed

Summary

Scott Purdue, 22, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of cannabis for sale or supply after a court heard that he had been caught with a Kinder Surprise egg containing about €4,300 of cannabis. The egg was found wrapped in a sock beside a car in Shancastle Park, Clondalkin, on 20 October 2019. Purdue's defence counsel, Breffni Gordon BL, described a history of violent attacks on the defendant, including being shot in the head in 2017, shot in the lower abdomen in 2018 on the anniversary of the first shooting, and having two fingers forcibly removed when he was 16. Gordon also noted that the head wound left a round lodged in Purdue's head and caused significant impairment to his peripheral vision. Judge Martin Nolan, after considering a two‑and‑a‑half‑year sentence, imposed a 15‑month imprisonment term in light of the defendant's misfortunes.
