Summary

A 36‑year‑old Dublin man, Criostoir MacCarthaigh of An Gleann, Baile Phamar, is on trial at the Central Criminal Court for the murder of David Whyte, a 35‑year‑old man from New Cabra Road. The prosecution alleges that between 24 and 26 September 2008, MacCarthaigh stabbed Whyte more than 100 times, the most serious wound injuring his jugular. The case is based on a post‑mortem that found the excessive stab wounds and on testimony that MacCarthaigh and others were drinking in an apartment on Ulster Street when Whyte was outside. An acquaintance reportedly saw MacCarthaigh with a knife over Whyte's body. MacCarthaigh was then driven to Palmerstown, where he allegedly walked Whyte to a graveyard and repeatedly stabbed him, causing his death. He has pleaded not guilty. The trial, presided over by Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy, is expected to last up to 12 days.
