'Theft of security and trust': woman stole from elderly friend (90)
Summary
Lynda Goldsmith, aged 65, stole more than €2,700 from a 90‑year‑old friend over three months. She took cash from the victim's bank account by using the victim's debit card to buy groceries and also withdrew money from the victim's purse, which was kept in a drawer in the victim's bedroom. Goldsmith admitted in a Garda interview that she stole the cash because she felt her pension was insufficient and that she thought it would be "nice to have a bit of money". She pleaded guilty to four charges of stealing cash and one of theft of an ATM card, representing a sample of 31 thefts between 16 January and 4 April 2019. The court heard that after stealing the victim's card in hospital, Goldsmith accepted €70 from the victim's son, claiming it was owed for petrol money.
