Accused offered to show gardai 'where murder weapon was', trial hears

Summary

In a murder trial held on 13 October 2020, a 17‑year‑old accused of stabbing a homeless man 183 times offered to show the police where the murder weapon was. The teenager, Philip Dunbar, 20, pleaded not guilty to the murder of 23‑year‑old Adam 'Floater' Muldoon, who was found dead in Butler Park, Tallaght, on 23 June 2018. Garda Shane Whelan testified that he was called to Tallaght Garda Station early on 24 June, where he met Dunbar and his grandmother. Dunbar claimed he knew he had killed Muldoon and could not remember the stabbing. He offered to show the police the location of the knife, which was later found in a small lake at Seán Wash Park after the lake was drained. Dr James Maloney examined Dunbar and found him fit for interview, recommending a psychiatric assessment. Dunbar denied being under the influence of drugs, describing himself as alert and coherent.
