'Superman' avoids jail over fake bible bash

Summary

Denis Ward, 39, was given a two‑year suspended sentence after he head‑butted Daragh Comerford at D Two Nightclub on Halloween 2017. Ward, who had been dressed as Superman, took a fake bible from Comerford and then lunged at him, leaving Comerford with a broken nose and a deviated septum that required surgery. Gardaí were alerted to the assault and security staff identified Ward as the Superman costume wearer. CCTV footage showed Ward removing the pretend bible before the attack. Ward pleaded guilty to assault causing harm. He had four prior convictions, including three road traffic offences. Judge Melanie Greally, after hearing a victim impact statement that Comerford lost €1,100 in medical bills and time off work, suspended the two‑year sentence in full. The judge noted that alcohol was a significant factor and that Ward's behaviour was out of character.
