Footage of drunken attack on man 'very disturbing', judge says

Summary

In a drunken brawl on 24 April 2018, Mark Connolly (25), Stephen McNamee (25) and Natalie Mulligan (33) chased Paul O'Kelly from a chipper in Rathmines, punched and kicked him as he lay on the ground, and then attacked him again in the car park of the Rathmines Garda Station. CCTV footage showed the trio striking O'Kelly, who later suffered nerve damage to his thumb and required surgery. All three pleaded guilty to assault causing harm. Judge Karen O'Connor, after viewing the footage, placed them on bond to keep the peace until 15 January and indicated she intended to order 100 hours of community service in lieu of a one‑year prison term. Each defendant brought €1,500 to the court as a practical expression of remorse. The court heard that the defendants were intoxicated and expressed remorse, and that O'Kelly had also consumed cocaine and cannabis that night.
