Summary

In a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing, Paul Nugent, a marketing manager aged 58, pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm after his BMW struck Thomas Clinton, an 80‑year‑old pedestrian, on Harbour Road, Howth, on 8 January 2018. Nugent claimed he had no time to react when Clinton stepped onto the road from behind a parked car. Clinton suffered life‑threatening injuries, including head trauma, a broken leg, a dislocated shoulder and significant chest fractures, and was hospitalized in intensive care for several weeks. Prosecutor Derek Cooney described Clinton's habit of walking from Raheny to Howth and noted the high mortality risk for his age group with such injuries. Nugent's defence maintained that he was driving safely and that the collision was unavoidable. The case remains before Judge Karen O'Connor and a jury.
