Aaron Brady: defence wanted secret recording to go before jury

Summary

In the case of Aaron Brady, the defence counsel, Mr Michael O'Higgins SC, argued that a covert recording should be presented to the jury. The recording, allegedly made by a suspect in a robbery, captured Special Agent Matt Katske of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security speaking at Belfast Airport in July 2017. Katske reportedly offered citizenship assistance in exchange for information that could convict Brady. The defence claimed that the agent's remarks suggested a possible campaign to pressure witnesses, including Daniel Cahill, who had testified that Brady had shot a Garda. Mr O'Higgins sought to have the tape played and to question Agent Katske, but Judge Michael White denied both requests, stating the matter was collateral and that no inducements had been offered to Cahill. The court therefore rejected the defence's attempt to introduce the recording before the jury.
