Summary

Sean Rausch, aged 22, pleaded guilty to two robberies and false imprisonment at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He had earlier held a 19‑year‑old Latvian student at knifepoint on Wellington Quay, forcing the victim to hand over his wallet and flee. Later that day he robbed another 19‑year‑old man on Aston Quay, who described Rausch approaching him with a knife, then putting the blade away and telling him about his difficult life. The second victim, feeling threatened, offered Rausch a chicken roll and soft drink, which Rausch accepted before leaving the shop. Rausch, who had been homeless in an underground car park for several weeks and had a drug problem, wrote a letter of apology to the court, explaining he had robbed for food and drugs and regretted the fear he caused. Judge Karen O'Connor adjourned sentencing to October 6, 2020 to allow a probation report to be prepared.
