Man alleged to have raped woman after meeting her in GAA club
Summary
A 33‑year‑old Westmeath man is accused of anally raping a woman in his home after they met at a GAA club on New Year's Eve 2016. The alleged assault took place on 1 January 2017. The man pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court. Prosecutor Orla Crowe SC told the jury that the woman and a friend attended the club, met the accused, and were taken to his house where the alleged rape occurred. The woman reportedly asked him to stop, struggled, and was left on a couch. She stayed in the house that night, was taken to her friend's house the next morning, and reported the incident to Gardaí the following day. The trial is proceeding before Mr Justice Paul McDermott with a jury of five women and seven men.
