20-year-old caught with €100k in cannabis 'knew what he was getting into'

Aaron Byrne, 20, of Knowth Court, Poppintree, Dublin, was sentenced to four years' imprisonment after Gardaí seized nearly €100,000 worth of cannabis from him on 28 September 2019. Byrne, who has prior convictions for drug dealing, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession for sale or supply. Garda Kevin Brennan reported that Byrne and another man were seen at a waste ground called "Seven Pitches" near an IKEA store, placing cannabis into clear plastic bags. Byrne fled but was apprehended; the other man was injured in a motorbike crash. Byrne's mother wrote that he had turned to drugs after his sister's death seven years earlier. Judge Martin Nolan noted Byrne's previous record and the seriousness of the drug amount, but also acknowledged his potential for reform, before back‑dating the sentence to the date of arrest.
