Nephew carried out 'despicable' armed burglary of uncles home

Summary

Derek Carrick, aged 43, was sentenced to five and a half years' imprisonment after pleading guilty to aggravated burglary in Ballyfermot on 11 February 2019 and unlawfully seizing a car on 10 October 2019. Carrick, a nephew of three brothers in their 50s and 60s, entered their home armed with knives and wearing a balaclava. Two brothers were held at knife‑point downstairs while Carrick took a third victim upstairs and stole €12,000 from an envelope and €80 from a bag. He also jumped into a 68‑year‑old woman's car, which he started without a key, and drove away. The car was later recovered with Carrick asleep inside. Carrick had 44 prior convictions, made full admissions, and apologized to the woman. Judge Martin Nolan described the burglary as "despicable" and noted the crime was frightening, though not violently extreme. He imposed the sentence after noting Carrick's remorse and the disappointment felt by the victims.
