Romanian man gets permission to challenge extradition for murder allegedly committed in Ireland

Petronel Pal, a 36‑year‑old Romanian, was arrested in Dublin in 2019 and faces extradition to Romania for alleged involvement in the murder of fellow Romanian Virgil Busa, who was violently assaulted on 10 April 2014 at Academy Square, Navan, and died three days later. Pal and other identified individuals are accused of forming an organised crime group, allegedly headed by a relative of Pal, and of breaking into Busa's apartment in the early hours of the murder date. Pal's lawyers argued that the case raises a point of law of exceptional public importance, questioning whether the High Court correctly applied extraterritoriality principles and whether it is permissible to prosecute individuals for crimes committed in other EU Member States. The appeal will be heard by the Court of Appeal.
