Garda under criminal investigation seeks to stop dismissal from force

Summary

A probationary Garda, whose name is withheld for legal reasons, has filed a High Court challenge to prevent his dismissal from the force. He is under criminal investigation following his arrest and a home search conducted under a warrant issued under the Offences Against the State Acts. After his arrest, he was suspended from duty over alleged irregularities in the possession, storage and processing of firearms and related materials and documents as part of his role. The Garda denies any wrongdoing and says he will make a full defence if given the opportunity. Earlier this year, the Garda Commissioner proposed to dispense with his services based on a report compiled by a senior officer. The report alleged that the Garda was found in possession of items, including documents, keys to storage rooms, a utility belt, handcuffs and other Garda accessories that he was not entitled to or had permission to possess.
