In February 2020, Susan Byrne, a former post office clerk at Balbriggan sub‑post office, filed a High Court damages action against An Post and the postmaster, Mr Paul Hannon, alleging negligence after an attempted tiger kidnapping on 4 October 2011. The incident involved three masked armed raiders who tied up Byrne and her husband, forcing Byrne to fill bags with money at the post office. Byrne claims she was not warned of the risks of tiger kidnappings, nor given proper training or guidance on operating the sub‑post office, and that staff were not informed of preventative measures. The post office denied the claims. On 28 February 2020, Mr Justice Mark Sanfey ruled on a pre‑trial issue regarding discovery of documents.
