Nurse struck off for stealing money from patients

Summary

In a High Court hearing, a psychiatric nurse who had worked for nearly two decades was struck off the nursing register after it was found that between 2012 and 2014 she stole money from the bank accounts of four mental health service users. The nurse withdrew amounts ranging from about €100 to €900 without the patients' consent and kept the money for her own benefit. An investigation by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland's Fitness to Practice Committee concluded that she had committed professional misconduct and violated the Board's code of conduct. Although the nurse expressed insight, regret and remorse, repaid the money, and was not publicly named, the High Court President, Mr Justice Peter Kelly, cancelled her registration, citing a breach of the enormous trust placed in nursing professionals. The unnamed woman was found guilty.
