Summary

In July 2016, Thomas Cassin, 49, entered an off‑licence in Killbarrack Shopping Centre wearing a ski mask and demanding money. He threatened staff with a knife, though none was seen, and the staff member initially thought it was a joke. Cassin was pursued by security guards who tried to restrain him until Gardaí arrived. A ten‑minute struggle ensued, part verbal and part physical; Cassin punched a guard, fracturing the guard's nose, and sustained a cut above his eye. Cassin left the store empty‑handed on a push bike. CCTV footage and DNA from blood on the guard's shirt identified him. He pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Sentencing was adjourned to May 5, 2020 to allow a probation report to be prepared.
