Festival goer who attacked garda to be assessed for community service

Summary

During the Beatyard music festival in Dun Laoghaire on 4 August 2018, 30‑year‑old Jason Hodgkins was caught by Garda Desmond Molloy carrying a drug tablet. Hodgkins complied with a search but became agitated and argued with the officer. A scuffle broke out, and Hodgkins climbed onto the Garda, punching him six times in the head and attempting to bite him. The officer was pepper‑sprayed in the process. Hodgkins was later subdued and pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing harm and three counts of possession of small amounts of drugs, including cannabis and a 2CB tablet. He paid €1,500 as a token of remorse, and the Garda suggested the payment go to Down Syndrome Ireland. Judge Melanie Greally ruled that Hodgkins should be assessed for community service, with the matter to be finalized on 24 March.
