Summary

David Galloway, aged 54, appeared before the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 16 January 2020, pleading not guilty to seven charges of unlawfully applying the trademarks of Persil, Ariel, Fairy, Daz and Bold to buckets, and fourteen charges of possession of buckets, labels and boxes bearing those trademarks. The alleged offences mainly took place at a commercial premises in Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole, on 7 June 2014. Gardaí discovered a large number of buckets labelled with the brand names, a substantial quantity of white powder that appeared to be washing powder, and numerous labels ready for attachment. Prosecutor Dominic McGinn presented evidence that Galloway was responsible for the premises and was trading in these goods "to a significant degree." The prosecution argued that the use of the trademarks without proper authorisation constituted the offences, and that the commercial nature of the activity was central to the case.
