Murder accused's Isis claims "rambling and incoherent", garda tells trial
Summary
In a Central Criminal Court hearing, Detective Inspector Martin Beggy told the jury that Mohamed Morei, 21, had no terrorist links and that his claims of being an Isis member were "rambling" and "totally incoherent". Morei, who had applied for asylum in Britain and then in Ireland, was arrested in Northern Ireland and later travelled to Dundalk where he carried out a series of attacks on January 3 2018. He stabbed Yosuke Sasaki, 24, and assaulted two other men, all of whom were wearing headphones. Psychiatric experts Dr Brenda Wright and Dr Paul O'Connell diagnosed Morei with paranoid schizophrenia and a mild intellectual disability, stating that he believed he was justified in his actions and could not refrain from them. The defence has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity for all charges, and the trial is ongoing before Justice Carmel Stewart and a 12‑person jury.
