Hard working Japanese man stabbed to death on public street by "very very unwell" Egyptian
Summary
In a tragic incident on 3 January 2018, 20‑year‑old Egyptian Mohamed Morei, who had no fixed abode, stabbed 24‑year‑old Japanese Yosuke Sasaki to death on Long Avenue, Dundalk. Morei, suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, also attacked Dylan Grehan and Cian Murphy, and caused criminal damage to a car and burglary at Long Avenue. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to all charges. The trial, opened by Sean Gillane SC, presented psychiatric evidence that Morei was severely unwell, with disordered thoughts, and was not aware of the wrongfulness of his actions. Morei has been committed to the Central Mental Hospital since the charge. The case is pending before the Central Criminal Court, with the jury hearing scheduled for the following day.
