Inmate threw bucket of excrement over prison officer

Summary

Ian Quinn, 38, of St Aongus Park, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to assaulting a prison officer in Mountjoy Prison on 30 January 2019. Officer Colin Ryan, who knew Quinn from earlier that morning, was walking across a landing when Quinn approached with a bucket. Quinn threw the bucket's contents—excrement—over Ryan's face and uniform. Ryan initially thought it might be boiling water but soon realised it was feces, which entered his mouth, eyes, boots and radio. The incident left Ryan traumatised and unfit for work for four weeks. Quinn, already serving a two‑and‑a‑half‑year sentence for a separate offence, was sentenced to an additional two months' imprisonment, to run consecutively with his existing term. The court noted that Quinn had produced a knife in prison and that the assault was described as a "pretty low assault" that was nasty and ridiculing. The judge emphasised that the incident had led to Quinn's six‑month solitary confinement.
