Woman sold fake designer goods at Christmas fairs

Summary

Margaret Kavanagh, 67, of Kilnamanagh, Dublin, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession and distribution of counterfeit handbags, sunglasses, scarves and other items bearing the emblems of brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Michael Kors and Ted Baker. Gardaí received confidential information that the goods were to be delivered to her home address on 9 December 2016, observed a truck arrive, and seized a number of boxes. A search warrant was executed, during which Kavanagh admitted to selling the counterfeit items at Christmas fairs over the previous 12 to 18 months. The seized goods were valued at €18,753, with cash of £1,295 and €12,760 also found. She had no prior convictions. Judge Martin Nolan sentenced her to two years' imprisonment, suspended in full, and ordered the destruction of the items bearing brand emblems, while allowing the unbranded items to be returned.
