Couple present for genital mutilation of their daughter, State argue

The trial of a couple accused of mutilating their daughter's genitals began before a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The unnamed 37‑year‑old man and 27‑year‑old woman pleaded not guilty to one count of female genital mutilation and one count of child cruelty, both alleged to have occurred on 16 September 2016. Prosecutor Shane Costelloe argued that the couple brought their one‑year‑old daughter to a hospital after she began bleeding. A paediatric surgeon performed a procedure to stop the bleeding and concluded the injury was not accidental. He stated that the clitoral head had been excised and removed. The surgeon and colleagues referred the matter to Gardaí, who began an investigation. The prosecution claimed the couple aided, abetted or procured the act and were present at its commission. The case is now before Judge Elma Sheahan and a jury.
