Pill addict knocked out teeth of paramedic who tried to help him

Summary

In a case heard at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Daniel Smyth, aged 28, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm after an incident on a Dublin bus on 1 July 2018. While a Dublin Fire Brigade member, Paul Bateman, was attending to Smyth, who had passed out on the bus, Smyth attacked Bateman once he had helped him to his feet. Smyth struck Bateman in the face, knocking out his two front teeth. Smyth later returned to the scene and attempted a second attack. He claimed he had no memory of the assault, citing detox from benzodiazepines and a prohibition on alcohol. Smyth had 24 prior convictions and was homeless at the time. Judge Cormac Quinn sentenced him to 20 months' imprisonment, suspending the final 10 months on strict conditions.
