Speeding driver fatally struck boy (13) who ran across road

Summary

A 13‑year‑old boy, Lee Henry, was fatally injured when a black VW Golf driven by Dean Shelley struck him while the vehicle was speeding on the R139 in Coolock. Shelley, 29, pleaded guilty to careless driving causing death and failure to stop. The boy was running across the road with friends when the collision occurred around 9 pm on 22 October 2016. Shelley fled the scene, abandoning his car at Clare Hall, and was later found with his wallet and licence. Emergency services attended the scene and Lee was pronounced dead at Temple Street Hospital. Shelley's prior convictions include drug possession and other traffic offences. The court heard a victim impact statement from Lee's mother, describing his aspirations and the tragedy of his loss. Judge Karen O'Connor ordered a probation report before sentencing, which is set for 12 December.
