Jail for dad-of-five who twice attacked former partner at children's hospital

Summary

Christopher Gannon, 36, of Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, on 6 October 2018. He attacked his former partner, who was there with their son, twice, punching her numerous times and causing a fractured nose and temporary double vision. The assault occurred while the child was in the hospital. Gannon had a prior conviction for assault and public intoxication. Justice Patricia Ryan noted the seriousness of the injuries, the hospital setting, the repeated attacks and the victim's repeated blows, but also cited Gannon's guilty plea, admissions to Gardaí, apology, good work record and lack of prior Garda attention as mitigating factors. She sentenced him to three years' imprisonment, suspending the final 18 months on strict conditions. The case was heard in the criminal court on 18 October 2019.
