New trial date for murder plot accused after complaint

Summary

Dean Howe, aged 34, was granted a new trial date after he complained that the original date of 7 October 2019 was too soon. He had been returned to the non‑jury Special Criminal Court after being charged in May 2019 with conspiring to murder Mr Hanley at a location within the State between 15 September and 6 November 2017. Howe had previously been given a trial date of 7 October, but his counsel, Paul Carroll SC, argued that the case was substantial and that Howe could not be ready for that date. Judge Tony Hunt, with Judges Ann Ryan and Michael Walsh, adjourned the trial to 13 January 2020, a date expected to last up to six weeks. Howe will be remanded in custody to appear before the court again on that date. Liam Brannigan, aged 37, is also charged with conspiring to murder Mr Hanley and his trial will take place on 7 October.
