"Madness" overtook man who left victim with life-altering injuries
Summary
Aaron Wilson, aged 30, was jailed for eight and a half years after he attacked Aaron Kiely, aged 32, and his girlfriend when Wilson saw the couple interfering with a window on Wilson's partner's car. Wilson pursued the couple and struck Kiely on three separate occasions, punching, kicking, stamping and using a chair to beat him. Kiely suffered deafness in his left ear, lost hearing in his right ear, fractures to both sides of his skull and a blood clot on his brain, leaving him unable to live independently and requiring 24‑hour care. Wilson pleaded guilty to assault causing serious harm in January 2014. He had 14 prior minor traffic convictions and had failed to appear for a 2016 trial, resulting in a bench warrant. The judge, Martin Nolan, described the attacks as "particularly violent" and noted that Wilson's remorse and the severity of Kiely's injuries justified the sentence. The court did not read the victim impact reports.
