Pharmacy employee stabbed in arm during failed robbery

Summary

In a failed robbery at Medipharm on 23 March 2018, Brendan Duffy (45) of Ballyfermot, Dublin, entered the pharmacy and demanded the male employee open the till. The employee refused, and a struggle ensued. Duffy punched the employee, who was knocked onto a display case. Duffy then produced a screwdriver, threatened the employee with "I'll kill you," and stabbed him in the arm before fleeing the shop. Duffy claimed the offence was driven by a drug debt and fear of debtors, and that he had no intention to harm anyone. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, admitting the offence and cooperating with Gardaí. Judge Martin Nolan, noting Duffy's guilty plea, remorse, prior convictions, drug problems beginning at age 16, and personal tragedy, sentenced him to 14 months imprisonment, crediting time already served.
