Would-be robber told gardai he might have been "hallucinating"

Summary

Patrick Hand, 38, with 100 prior convictions, was captured on CCTV attempting to rob a man at an Abbey Street LUAS stop on 15 July 2017. Hand approached the victim, asked for the price of a vodka bottle, and after the victim refused, followed him to the stop, demanding money and then trying to take his bag. He struck the victim in the chest and face. Hand, heavily intoxicated with cocaine and alcohol, was restrained by LUAS security until Gardaí arrived. During a Garda interview, Hand admitted the incident, acknowledged wrongdoing, and claimed he might have been hallucinating and had a blackout. He believed the bag was his. He pleaded guilty to attempted robbery. The court adjourned sentencing to 31 July to allow a probation report and a full plea in mitigation.
