Asst Commissioner gives belief evidence at IRA trial

Summary

A Garda Assistant Commissioner has given evidence at the Special Criminal Court that he believes a County Louth man is a member of the IRA. Michael Connolly, aged 47, of Dundalk, has pleaded not guilty to membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself Oglaigh na hEireann, the IRA, on 16 December 2014. The prosecution alleges Mr Connolly was observed by gardaí driving in convoy with another man, who was subsequently found in possession of two improvised explosive devices. Assistant Commissioner Michael O'Sullivan told the court he believed the accused was an IRA member on the date in question, basing his opinion on confidential material. Under cross-examination, the witness claimed privilege regarding tradecraft used, stating disclosure could inhibit ongoing operations. The trial continues before Mr Justice Paul Coffey, presiding, with Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin and Judge James Faughnan.
