Moonlight murder trial jury sent home for weekend
Summary
The jury in the trial of Patrick Quirke, a 50‑year‑old farmer from Breanshamore, Co. Tipperary, has been sent home for the weekend and will return for a fifth day of deliberations on Monday. Quirke is charged with murdering Bobby Ryan, a part‑time DJ who disappeared on 3 June 2011 after leaving his girlfriend Mary Lowry's home. Ryan's body was found 22 months later in an underground run‑off tank on a farm owned by Lowry and leased by Quirke at Fawnagown, Tipperary. The prosecution alleges Quirke killed Ryan to rekindle an affair with Lowry, aged 52, while the defence argues the prosecution has not proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and seeks acquittal. The jury, composed of six men and six women, has deliberated about 11 hours and faces two verdict options: guilty of murder or not guilty. Justice Eileen Creedon released the jury for the weekend, instructing them to return at 11 a.m.
