Five years for man who attacked and threatened ex with "execution"

Summary

Barry O'Donoghue, 38, of Drimnagh, was convicted by a jury at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for assault causing harm and for threatening to kill his former partner on 20 and 21 October 2016. Judge Elma Sheahan sentenced him to five and a half years for the threat to kill and three years for the assault, with both sentences running concurrently. The final six months of the sentence were suspended for a 12‑month period post‑release, conditional on good behaviour, compliance with the Probation Service, and participation in anger‑management. The judge also ordered O'Donoghue to have no contact with the victim except through solicitors. The court heard that O'Donoghue had kicked the woman in the face, threatened her with a bread knife, and told her "tonight was her execution." The victim suffered eye surgery and facial nerve damage and expressed fear of revenge. O'Donoghue had no prior convictions.
